AUTISM TESTING
Marshall Medical Center (MMC) Physical Therapy offers comprehensive autism spectrum disorder (ASD) testing for both children and adults. Additionally, specialists at MMC Physical Therapy work with local schools and students’ parents to help them build best practices for students with ASD.
AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges with social interactions, communication and repetitive behaviors. The spectrum nature of autism means that it manifests differently in everyone, with varying degrees of severity and a diverse range of symptoms.
Some common signs include:
- Difficulty in making eye contact
- Delayed language development
- Strict adherence to routines
- Unique sensory processing experiences
- Picky eating of no more than five foods
Autism is generally diagnosed in early childhood, but signs can be apparent at any age.
TESTING PROCESS
The testing protocol includes a developmental screening followed by one of two advanced pathways, depending on the needs of the child or adult:
The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Review (ADI-R), ideal for adults and parents of non-verbal children.
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2), best suited for verbal children.
This comprehensive approach ensures precise and individualized assessments, with results typically available within one to two weeks.
SCHEDULING AN EVALUATION
For appointments, families or individuals will need a referral from their pediatrician or primary care provider.

What if my child is diagnosed – what’s next?
If a child is diagnosed with ASD, professional occupational, speech and physical therapists can work closely with the family to develop a tailored support plan. This includes providing resources with therapy, connecting with local support groups and collaborating with schools to ensure the child receives appropriate educational accommodation. Ongoing support is suggested to help the child thrive.
