OUR SERVICES
The providers at MRMG Mid-South Gastroenterology also specialize in gastrointestinal procedures, including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. The nonsurgical procedures are used to help diagnose conditions such as cancer, ulcers, reflux, celiac disease and Crohn’s disease. A flexible tube with a light and camera attached are used for all three procedures to view your digestive tract on a monitor.
COLONOSCOPY
Colonoscopy is used to screen for colon cancer and explore causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal issues.
During a colonoscopy, an endoscope is passed into the colon — or large intestine — through the rectum to examine the entire length of the colon. If necessary, the endoscope can be used to take a tissue sample for a biopsy or remove pre-cancerous polyps to prevent colon cancer from developing.
Men and women who are 45 years or older and at average risk for colon cancer should consult with their primary care physician about scheduling regular colonoscopies. The American Cancer Society recommends a first-time colonoscopy at age 45 then following in 10-year intervals. Those with a family history of colon cancer or who have any other risk factor for colon cancer may need to begin screening earlier or more often, as recommended by their physician.
UPPER ENDOSCOPY
An upper endoscopy is used to determine the cause of gastrointestinal disorders and symptoms such as heartburn, Barrett’s esophagus, hiatal hernias, unexplained anemia, difficulty swallowing, upper GI bleeding and the presence of tumors or ulcers.
During an upper endoscopy, an endoscope is passed through the mouth and throat and into the esophagus, allowing the doctor to view the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the small intestine. Upper endoscopy can be used to obtain a biopsy to distinguish between benign and malignant tissues.
FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is used much like a colonoscopy, but it only allows specialists to see the lower part of the colon rather than its entirety. It’s used to determine the cause of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal problems.
Like a colonoscopy, during a flexible sigmoidoscopy, a sigmoidoscope with a tiny camera attachment is passed into the colon through the rectum to examine approximately the last two feet of the colon. If necessary, a biopsy can be obtained during the procedure.
