Thyroid Health
The thyroid is a gland that is part of the body's endocrine system. This butterfly-shaped gland is located near the front of the neck. The thyroid has two sides and is composed of many blood vessels. The thyroid's function is to produce hormones that regulate an individual's metabolism, body temperature and growth.
When the thyroid does not function properly by producing either too much hormone or too little hormone, a number of health conditions can result. The specialists with Maury Regional Medical Group Endocrinology diagnose and treat conditions related to thyroid function. Some of the most common are listed below.
conditions treated
Hypothyroidism
This condition occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough hormone to regulate the body's metabolism and other functions. This often may be a result of an autoimmune disorder such as Hashimoto's disorder.
Individuals with hypothyroidism may experience a range of symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation and dry skin. Your primary care provider may refer you to an endocrinologist for management of hypothyroidism.
Maury Regional Medical Group Endocrinology specializes in treatment of hypothyroidism. Treatment for this condition often includes medication that can replace the natural thyroid hormone that is missing.
Hyperthyroidism
When the thyroid produces too much hormone, a condition known as hyperthyroidism results. It is most often caused by a condition known as Graves disease or a nodule on the thyroid.
Signs that someone may have a hyperactive thyroid can include weight loss, a rapid heart rate, excessive sweating and diarrhea.
Treatment for hyperthyroidism can often include medication or sugery. The specialists with Maury Regional Medical Group Endocrinology can help determine how to best manage this condition.
Thyroid nodule
When a small mass or lump develops on the thyroid gland, it may cause the production of extra hormones. This can result in hyperthyroidism. Nodules are very common and are usually benign.
Treatment for a thyroid nodule may include surgery if the nodule is causing issues such as pain and difficulty breathing. Medication can help replace the thyroid hormone if the gland is removed.
Thyroid cancer
While not common, a malignant growth on the thyroid can develop and require treatment. In such cases, surgery may be recommended to remove the thyroid and surround tissues.
Goiter
Swelling can occur on the thyroid and cause various health effects. The cause can be diagnosed and treatment provided when necessary.
diagnosis and treatment
The specialists with Maury Regional Medical Group Endocrinology use a variety of tests to diagnose conditions related to thyroid health. These may include physical exams of the neck area as well as blood tests to check the levels of thyroid hormones - commonly known as T3 and T4. Other blood tests can indicate levels of TSH, which can be an indicator for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
Specialists may also recommend imaging exams such as ultrasound to examine the thyroid. A biopsy of thyroid tissue may be recommended to look for abnormal cells that could indicate a cancerous growth.
Our physicians use results from these and other tests to guide recommendations about treatment for your particular condition. Treatment can include special medication to regulate thyroid function or referral for a surgical procedure to remove a portion or all of the thyroid gland.
If thyroid health is a concern, ask your physician about a referral to MRMG Endocrinology.
