COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Maury Regional Hospital (MRH) has been recognized for excellence in cardiac care by VHA Inc., a national health care alliance based in Irving, Texas.  The hospital was honored at the VHA Leadership Conference in Denver on May 20. This is the second consecutive year that Maury Regional Hospital has received an award from VHA for excellence in cardiac care.

“This award validates the dedicated focus of our clinical staff and physicians to provide excellent care to our cardiac patients,” said Deborah Lumpkins, administrative director of cardiopulmonary services. “Our participation in VHA helps us achieve a higher level of performance both operationally and clinically, and we are pleased to receive recognition from VHA for our work in cardiac care.”

The VHA 2007 Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence in cardiac care is based on the latest set of measures that has been nationally accepted as indicators of quality. The best practice standards for treating congestive heart failure include:

  • ACE inhibitors or beta blocker administration for left ventricular systolic dysfunction
  • Detailed discharge instructions provided to patient
  • Left ventricular function assessment performed on patient
  • Adult smoking cessation advice/counseling provided to patient prior to discharge

Maury Regional Hospital achieved at least a 90 percent compliance with all rate-based indicators to qualify for the award and is one of 98 VHA member hospitals nationwide to receive a 2007 Leadership Award for excellence in treating congestive heart failure.

Maury Regional Hospital CEO Robert Otwell stated, “The physicians and staff who provide cardiopulmonary services at Maury Regional Hospital are committed to providing outstanding patient care. I am pleased that their efforts have been recognized with this distinguished national award for quality.”

VHA serves 2,400 health care organizations nationwide, including 1,400 hospitals.  Nearly 300 hospitals across the nation received VHA Leadership Awards for achievements in operational or clinical excellence, supply chain management improvement and community benefit.

"At the heart of the covenant between patients and hospitals lies the belief that clinical excellence is paramount," said Trent Haywood, M.D., J.D., chief medical officer at VHA. "Maury Regional Hospital is a shining example of what can be achieved when a hospital's actions are guided by the pursuit of clinical excellence."
